All who are in Christ Jesus, and continue in His Word, are given the opportunity to live free. John 8:36 is where we find assurance of this freedom. The Scripture reads, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” However, the Bible does warn us that we should be careful not to fall back into spiritual bondage (Galatians 5:1). So, the question is this. As women, how can we apply our freedom in Christ and remain free?
What Does Spiritual Freedom in Womanhood Look Like
A woman who is spiritually free is confident in her identity. She knows that she is a daughter of the King and a queen in her own right. You can read more about our queenship in my previous post here. She knows her value and her worth and presents herself in a manner worthy of respect. She appreciates beauty and fashion, but they are not her master. A woman living in spiritual freedom always seeks to build up other women with her words, not to tear them down. This is a woman that is truly free.
The Traps of Spiritual Bondage
Satan, our enemy, has set traps of spiritual bondage for women that are subtle and easy fall into. The good news is, if we are aware of them, they are even easier to spot and avoid!
Sexualization of Women’s Bodies
Your body is the temple of the Living God. However, society has taught women that her body is an object used only for attracting men. Women often fall into the trap of imitating other women they see on social media that they perceive men want. This behavior leads to tighter, more revealing clothes, body augmentation, and a damaged self-image.
Worldly Beauty Standards
Everyone, and their mother, has a makeup tutorial out on YouTube or Instagram with a minimum of 50 steps. It comes with the need to purchase hundreds of makeup products and essentials. Not to mention, it adds an extra hour to your already busy morning routine. I’m being facetious of course, but there are women who are so in bondage in this area that they cannot leave the house without makeup. They are even afraid to let people see them without makeup on! Stay out of this trap.
Gossip
Psalm 34:12 says, “Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.” We should avoid the temptation to talk about others behind their backs. This is especially true when what we are spreading is nothing more than hearsay. This trap will only bring division and hurt.
Coveting
Covetousness is a big one for women. We have a bad habit of wanting what other women have. The grass is always greener on the other side, until you find out that it is AstroTurf.
