The story of Ruth in the Bible, found in the book of Ruth, is a powerful example of a woman who embodied the principles of biblical womanhood. Here’s her story in a nutshell. Ruth was one of the daughters-in-law of a widow called Naomi. When Naomi’s two sons died, she told their wives that they could leave an return to their families. While the one decided to leave, Ruth vowed to stay with her mother-in-law and serve her God. In this post, we’ll explore more of Ruth’s story. We will also discuss how the life of Ruth can teach us important lessons about faithfulness, hard work, humility, and courage.
Lessons We Can Learn from the Life of Ruth
Faithfulness
Ruth’s faithfulness to her mother-in-law Naomi and to Israel’s God (YAH) is a central theme in her story. The Bible tells us that Naomi dwelled with her sons and their wives in Moab for about 10 years before her sons died. Ten years is quite some time. However, after only 10 years and no children, Ruth could have possibly returned to her family and remarried. Why didn’t she do that?
Something made an impact on Ruth. It is likely that Ruth had plenty of time in that 10 years to get to know Naomi and YAH. Something stands out to me in Ruth’s vow to Naomi in verses 16 and 17. Ruth says, “Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.” Ruth knew YAH through Naomi’s relationship with Him, and she determined He was worth following.
Isn’t that interesting? They had faced so much tragedy, but Ruth still chose YAH. Her faithfulness to YAH was also evident in her decision to follow Naomi’s God instead of returning to her own people and gods. Despite the difficult circumstances she faced, Ruth remained committed to Naomi and refused to abandon her. Ruth’s example reminds us that faithfulness is a key aspect of biblical womanhood and encourages us to remain steadfast in our commitments.
The Life of Ruth Shows Us Hard Work
Another important characteristic of Ruth was her strong work ethic. Knowing that Naomi was in her older years and had no one to provide for her, Ruth offered to do it. She said she would glean grain in the fields of whoever would allow her to. Naomi agreed. By the hand of YAH, Ruth ended up in the fields of a relative of Naomi’s husband named Boaz. In the fields of Boaz, Ruth worked tirelessly to provide for herself and Naomi. As a result of her hard work, Boaz noticed her and showed her favor. Boaz took steps to protect and provide for Ruth.
Ruth’s example challenges us to work hard in our own lives, whether it be in our jobs or in serving others, and to trust that our efforts will be rewarded. We must also avoid the temptation to complain about our work or servitude. Complaining is a trap of the enemy that is so easy to fall into. Ask me how I know lol. Instead, the Bible tells us in Colossians 3:23-24, “…and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Humility
Ruth’s humility is also noteworthy. Despite her beauty and Boaz’s interest in her, Ruth remained humble and respectful towards him. She even followed Naomi’s instructions to approach Boaz with humility and respect (Ruth 3). In previous posts I wrote about the habits of radiantly beautiful Christian women and how to remain spiritually free from this world’s influence. Society today will have you thinking that you need to show a lot of skin and have a certain body shape to get attention from men. Social media has a lot to do with this as well. However, women who stand firm and confident in who God says they are and dress modestly, are truly the most beautiful! Ruth’s humility is a powerful reminder that true beauty comes from within, and that a humble heart is a key aspect of biblical womanhood.
The Life of Ruth Displays Courage
Finally, the life of Ruth also highlights her courage. Leaving her homeland and venturing into a new land took great courage, but Ruth was willing to do it. How often have you been led by The Most High to do something that required great courage and faith? Did you move forward with courage or did you opt to remain in your comfort zone? Sometimes, God will require you to walk by faith with courage and bravery to receive a blessing you didn’t know was ahead of you. “Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest,” Joshua 1:9.
Additionally, approaching Boaz, a wealthy and influential man, took courage and boldness. If God be for us, who can be against us? Whom shall we fear? Amen? Ruth’s example inspires us to be courageous in our own lives, especially when faced with difficult or uncertain situations.
Conclusion
The story of Ruth provides us with a powerful model of biblical womanhood. Ruth’s faithfulness, hard work, humility, and courage are all characteristics that we can learn from and apply to our own lives. By following in Ruth’s footsteps, we too can become women of faith, character, and strength.
