Have you ever felt like a failure? Like you are on a path to nowhere and everything is going wrong? As I have said in previous posts, you are not alone sis. I have been there too. Some days, I am still there, if I’m honest lol. However, The Most High has been giving me a lesson on how to win even when you are losing. Or, should I say when you think you are losing. Often, it is easiest to see the lesson by observing someone else’s situation.
How to Win Even When You Are Losing
Learning Is A Process
My oldest son loves to play soccer. He has been part of the same soccer league for several seasons now. The first season was really an introduction to the game. After that, passion and a competitiveness began to grow within him. The next two seasons were pretty much a disaster. They rarely won any games and had plenty of soul crushing defeats. Needless to say, my baby was ready to give up on soccer. I tried to reassure him that it is OK to lose, but he did not want to hear it.
My son was so focused on the loses that he could not see the “wins”. What he did not see was how his skills were improving as well as his understanding of the game. These were wins! The very next season, they came back and won every single game! This is exactly how God sees us as we go through life. It is a training course full of purpose. Every “loss” along the way is meant to sharpen our skills, build character, and deepen our understanding of Him. If you want to know the will of God for your life, your mind must go through a renewing process.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” -Romans 12:2
How Can You Lose But Still Win? Ask Joseph!
Romans 8:28 states, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” This is the Word of God. Do you believe this statement is true? Consider the life of Joseph whose story is detailed in Genesis beginning in chapter 37. After being sold into slavery by his own brothers, accused of sexual harassment, and thrown into prison, he saw the truth of Romans 8:28 first hand. Joseph had every reason to doubt The Most High, but instead, he remained steadfast in his love and faith in the Father. God used each of those “losses” to work for Joseph’s good and for the good of his family.
Even in your own life, this is how to win even when you are losing. Whether it is financial hardship, health challenges, or the loss of a child, to name a few, do not doubt God. He can see the bigger picture, and He IS causing all things to work together for your good. If you are a child of The Most High, you must learn to move beyond seeing what happens in your life as either “good” or “bad”. Everything that happens is working together for your good, child of God.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” -Romans 8:28
My Personal Experience
My belief in the validity of Romans 8:28 has been put to the test many times throughout my life. One of the most significant of those times occurred between my junior and senior years of college. As my junior year was ending, I was one of a few students selected for a summer internship at a very prestigious auditing/consulting firm. I was so excited and proud of myself! I felt that I could breathe a little easier about life after college as a secure job was becoming more likely.
All I had to do was prove that my final grade in accounting was decent. Then, all of a sudden…BOOM! My final accounting grade came in and it was a D! The internship ended and I was not offered a permanent position (obviously). Now, I was no slacker. I had gotten straight A’s all through high school and my first two years of college. However, accounting was just not my forte.
That was a loss that rocked my whole world. I was devastated and had no clue where to go from there. However, like Joseph, I made the decision to lean into God. My prayer life grew exponentially as a result of this loss. This was the first win. In the fall of my senior year, I met a guy who had volunteered in the Peace Corps. I was so inspired by his experience that I went home and applied that night. After a very long application process, I was accepted. This was the second win. I joined the Peace Corps, traveled to Ethiopia, met my husband and the rest is history!
Conclusion
Life will get hard from time to time. In fact, it is supposed to. There is purpose in the tough times. When it’s too much to bear alone, lean into the Lord in prayer and reach out to a sister-friend.
Keep this in mind. No matter what type of losses life throws at you, it may not be signaling the end. Trust in the Lord and belief that He is causing all things to work together for your good. You are going through a transformation process and being conformed to the image of Christ. Your character is being developed and your skills are being sharpened. Your understanding of The Most High is deepening and others will be strengthened and encouraged by your testimony. Avoid the temptation to doubt God, worry and be fearful about your situation. The Most High is still in control. This is how to win even when you are losing.
