Are biblical boy names played out? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I will concede, however, that the traditional biblical names are becoming far too common. Don’t get me wrong. I still think the more familiar bible-based boy names are cute…I have three! With that said, it is definitely time for us to upgrade the list of options.
The list of names in this post are fresh and unique! These boy names are strong names that will age well as he grows to become a man. You will see that I have provided a Scripture reference and alternate spellings for each name in case you want to really be unique. Additionally, keep in mind that these would also work well as middle names! God instructed us in the Bible to raise godly children in the “nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Why not give them a biblical name to match! I hope you enjoy reading this. Leave a comment and let me know which ones are your favorite!
UNIQUE BIBLICAL BOY NAMES
1. Priest
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” -1 Peter 2:9 KJV
I absolutely adore this name. It is a direct reference to who God says that we are in Christ. God says that we are to be kingly/queenly priests proclaiming the praises of the Father. It is a strong male name without being overly masculine.
Possible alternate spellings: Preest, Priyst
2. Righteous
“The righteous man who walks in integrity and lives life in accord with his [godly] beliefs–How blessed [happy and spiritually secure] are his children after him [who have his example to follow].” -Proverbs 20:7 AMP
Proverbs has many verses that contrast the character of the righteous against the unrighteous. So, anyone of those could have fit here. I like this one because it specifically talks about a “righteous man” and “his children after him”. Godly men of righteous character are needed in this world! This name declares godly character over your son. Every time you call his name, you are declaring righteousness over him. It is a powerful name!
Possible alternate spelling: Ryechous
3. Ruler
“…thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things…” -Matthew 25:21 KJV
A ruler is a person with authority and power. A good ruler rules fairly, justly, and is accountable for that which is in their control. He or she is respected by others. This name is definitely more on the masculine side so if that’s what you’re looking for, this is one of those really great biblical boy names!
Possible alternate spelling: Ru’ler, Rulure
4. Sword
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace on the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword [of division between belief and unbelief].” -Matthew 10:34 AMP
Wow! The verse above is a strong statement from Jesus Christ the Messiah. He did not mince words on this one. Ephesians 6:17 also tells us that the “sword of the Spirit” is the Word of God. The sword, the true and final Word of God, is a weapon in His hand. Your son Sword will be used powerfully by God! This name is DOPE!
Possible alternate spellings: Sworde, Sord
5. Altar
“Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” -Matthew 5:24 KJV
The altar, be it physical or in your heart, is a holy place. It is where we make offerings unto God. It speaks of holiness and consecration before God. Your Altar will be a man that is set apart for God’s use.
Possible alternate spelling: Allter
6. Kingdom
“…Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” -Matthew 3:2 KJV
The name Kingdom is such a beautiful name. It almost brings me to tears every time I think about the meaning and the little boy that will carry this name. He declares the soon return of King Jesus just as John the Baptist did in the wilderness. This is a name that is powerful, masculine and lovely all at the same time. For sure, it’s one of my favorites.
Possible alternate spelling: I recommend leaving this one as is. 🙂
7. Stone
“Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation…” Isaiah 28:16 KJV
We know Who this verse is really talking about. However, if you feel a little intimidated or sacrilegious about naming your son Jesus or Messiah, Stone is a great alternative! You are naming your child after THE CORNER STONE. Stone is a powerful and masculine name that reflects the Savior. I would choose it.
Possible alternate spelling: Stowne
8. Battle
“…Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” -2 Chronicles 20:15 KJV
This is such a cool name! What a great reminder that, no matter what we are up against, He will fight our battles for us! Praise be to God in the highest who fights our battles!
Possible alternate spellings: Battole, Battel, Batyle
9. Judaea
“And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem…” -Luke 2:4 KJV
I have heard people use the name Judah, and I really like that one too. Judaea just ups the uniqueness a little bit. Not many people use this name, but I think it’s so beautiful. It is a strong name but not overly masculine like Ruler, Battle or Sword etc. For those who may not know, Judaea is where our Lord and Savior was born, containing the small town of Bethlehem.
Possible alternative spellings: Judea, Judeyah (This is my favorite spelling since it includes YAH.)
10. Crown
“…the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne…” -Revelation 4:10
The Bible says that God will reward us with a crown for enduring until He returns. (James 1:12; 1 Peter 5:4; Revelation 3:11). Your Crown is your reward. Another beautiful, biblical boy name.
Possible alternate spelling: Crowne
